Short Shoutouts

A healthcare recognition platform connecting patients to their providers

Duration

Q4 2023 - Q1 2024

Responsibilities

User Research, Wireframing, Prototyping, User Testing, Visual Design

Role

As design lead for this project, I led all design initiatives, working closely with product management, and a team of in-house and remote developers

Goals

  1. Take what C.A. Short is really good at, (recognition) and tailor it for users in a healthcare setting

  2. Empower healthcare providers with the recognition they receive in participating in the platform

  3. Empower admins and supervisors with data and insights and tools to tailor the experience to their location

Background

C.A. Short clients in the healthcare industry don’t have a simple and effective recognition platform tailored to their industry and their employees. There is often a disconnect between healthcare providers and their patients; An intuitive platform to facilitate bridging this gap through recognition, letting providers know they are valued, is the solution.

Research

Through insights from clients in the healthcare industry, I was able to identify and create a few user personas to help guide my design decisions. For example, we knew that identifying options for a patient, a relative of the patient, or a friend of the patient, would cover a majority of the use cases for this platform.

The product manager I worked with having a background and familiarity in healthcare was also something I relied on, to help my own understanding of the challenges healthcare providers face and the biases and attitudes of many of their patients.

During the research and discovery phase, it became very clear that I needed to design this platform with a mobile-first approach, as this would also cover most of the use cases I needed to account for.

Challenges

HIPPA compliance and regulations heavily influenced design decisions early on. I had to be very tactful with using any identifying information for healthcare providers.

Working within these limitations, I had to also find ways of helping patients easily find their provider and send recognition to, and support them if they were unable to find them.

Visual Design

For the UI, I put together a small design system of components and opted for a color scheme that fit the healthcare industry well, but also one that worked for the clients who would be using the platform. With accessibility also being a priority for this project, clear CTAs and a healthy use of white space were key.

Reflection

This project was another big collaboration and one of the most meaningful and fulfilling, due to the Who and What I was designing for.
